The SAN4Fuel workshop ignited fresh ideas for further collaboration

The possibilities of using computational methodologies in the design of advanced materials and the analysis of their effect in catalytic applications for energy, biomedicine or the environment were discussed at a workshop of the SAN4Fuel project in Ostrava on 19 September. This gathering was a result of the synergistic partnership between the Nanotechnology Centre VSB-TUO’s Materials-Envi Lab and the SAN4Fuel project, which boasts, alongside Ostrava, other prestigious partners—the University of Trieste and the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg, Germany.

The goal of the European project SAN4Fuel is to develop new materials for sustainable energy and environmental chemistry applications deploying single atom catalysts. This innovative approach to the design of new materials and analysis of reaction mechanisms combines advanced theoretical models and calculations. This part of the research is conducted by the VSB-TUO partner, who also uses one of the most powerful European supercomputers of the national supercomputer centre IT4Innovations.

“For this reason, we chose VSB-TUO as the venue to gather experts from the respective fields. We not only discussed the latest research results in these interconnected areas, but also identified new directions and other possibilities for advancing in these scientific topics. Similar workshops are crucial to sharing new knowledge and ideas,” said the Principal Investigator of the SAN4Fuel project, Štěpán Kment.

The programme also included an excursion at IT4Innovations VSB-TUO with a presentation of the country’s top computing infrastructure. “Participants had a unique opportunity to look into technological innovations and infrastructure supporting our research. The whole team of the SAN4Fuel project was pleased with the success of this workshop,” said Kment, evaluating the event.
