European patent granted

The members of the Department of Inorganic Chemistry in collaboration with the Department of Cell Biology and Genetics have achieved further significant advancement in the research of novel highly effective potential anticancer drugs. The research of Pt(II) complexes involving 7-azaindole derivatives and their anticancer properties has led to a European patent entitled “Dichlorido complexes of platinum with 7-azaindole halogeno-derivatives for use in the treatment of tumour diseases” (EP2636410 B1; inventors: Zdeněk Trávníček, Pavel Štarha, Zdeněk Dvořák; granted on 2015/04/08). The patent claims the possible application of the presented compounds in the treatment of various types of human cancer (e.g. malignant melanoma, lung carcinoma, prostate carcinoma, cervical carcinoma or ovarian carcinoma), because the activity of the novel complexes was found to be up to 13-times higher as compared with clinically used cisplatin.
