Two-Dimensional Chemistry, the way towards new graphene derivatives

Graphene is an amazing two-dimensional carbon based material with numerous extraordinary properties, which predetermine it for exploitations in countless applications. The enormous application potential of graphene can be enhanced by its chemical functionalization. So far, only a few well-defined graphene derivatives have been introduced. Fluorographene is a prominent member of graphene derivatives, because it can be easily prepared from graphite fluoride, is stable and structurally well defined. Since its discovery, in 2010, it was considered rather unreactive and called 2D counter part of Teflon ®. Recently, we have shown that fluorographene is reactive material at ambient conditions and can serve as a suitable starting material for preparation of various graphene derivatives.
